4. The Foliage - The Ruins

Similar to Mimic, The Ruins' big bad lures its prey by relying on imitation. But the villains don't rely on mimicking appearances, but on sound.

Carter Smith's directorial debut kicks things off with Jeff and his buddies travelling to a flora-covered temple in Mexico. When they hear a ringing phone inside the ruins of the temple, the group agree to explore, believing somebody may have fallen in. However, they abandon this plan after members of the group suffer horrific injuries and infections, leading to multiple deaths.

After a while, the survivors discover the recent tragedies were all caused by the temple's plants. The deceitful flowers replicated the sound of a ringing cellphone to entice the tourists towards them.

Once they were close enough, the vines cut into their victims' skin, infecting them with spores. The spores overload the mind with paranoid thoughts, causing the hosts to violently attack themselves and others, making it easier for the plants to consume their target.

The sinister foliage mightn't have a brain between them, but the way they fool their victims with a multi-phase strategy is genius and terrifying.
