2. The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse
Like many of you we here at What Culture were extremely excited by the idea of a League of Gentlemen movie. The series (even the third) was by far some of the funniest, sinister and bonkers television we had ever seen and the idea of immortalising the folk of Royston Vasey on the big screen just seemed too good to be true. Somewhere between the announcement and the actual release however something must have gone terribly awry. The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse is one of those post-modern tales where characters from a TV show somehow make it into the real world. In this case characters like Tubbs and Edward and Papa Lazarou discover that series co-writer Jeremy Dyson plans to kill them all off and so set out to prevent the final script from seeing the light of day. Yes the idea is bonkers enough to work given the stellar cast and crew but sadly it just falls flat at every turn. This could have been the start of something big for The League but instead it was a heavily flawed end to one of the best British sitcoms of all time.
