10 More Times Actors Had To Get Drunk To Shoot Their Scenes

4. Robert Shaw - Jaws

Robert Shaw remains one of Hollywood's all-time most legendary drinkers, and shortly before his 1978 death even famously said, "Can you imagine being a movie star and having to take it seriously without a drink?”

Shaw carried this philosophy through most of his movies, and well into full-on binge-drinking mode while shooting Jaws. During filming of Quint's unforgettable S.S. Indianapolis speech, Shaw even convinced Spielberg to allow him a pre-shoot tipple, considering that his character was actually drinking in the movie. This resulted in Shaw getting totally wasted and Spielberg having to call the day's shooting at 11am.

Shaw was reportedly intoxicated through most of filming, and to his credit, it surely contributed to him giving such a memorable and endearingly grizzled performance.
