One of the most important moments in the Skywalker Saga occurs when the legendary Obi-Wan Kenobi is chopped down by his old Padawan on the Death Star in 1977's Star Wars.

It's this heartbreaking sacrifice which distracts Darth Vader long enough for the likes of Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Han Solo to make their escape. But, as unbelievable as it may seem, that wasn't always part of the plan.

Had George Lucas and co. opted to stick with the ideas thrown down in early versions of the script for what would eventually become known as Episode IV - A New Hope, ideas that would then lead to some interesting pieces of early concept art, then perhaps Kenobi would have actually found a way to survive that Vader showdown.

Those aforementioned early storyboard drawings, which were created by Ivor Beddoes and eventually put up for auction, show a version of that iconic Vader/Kenobi duel which involved a younger Obi-Wan not actually dying in that fight and disappearing, instead being saved by Luke after being mortally wounded.

And while the version of the Kenobi vs. Vader scene fans ultimately got in the end turned out to be one of the greatest moments in the franchise's history, it's still fascinating to see just how close we really were to a world where Obi-Wan wasn't struck down by his one-time apprentice.
