While Alien director Ridley Scott had seemingly been on the cusp of wrapping up the prequel trilogy he kicked off with 2012's Prometheus, it now seems that the Alien franchise is headed in a different direction, with word on a sequel to Alien: Covenant having gone dark for some time.

But that doesn't mean a new Alien movie isn't in the works. Fede Álvarez - who brought the likes of the chilling Evil Dead (2013) and Don't Breathe to screens - is on the verge of unleashing the latest instalment in the franchise, called Alien: Romulus.

On top of being a pure standalone story, focusing on a group of young people trying to keep from having their faces hugged by the horrifying Xenomorph, the fact Scott himself - a producer on the film and usually a pretty tough critic - has already described the incoming Alien horror as "f***ing great" to Alvarez after watching the director's cut points to a potential return to form for the series (via THR).

The same folks who helped bring the Xenomorphs in James Cameron's Aliens to life also returning - as noted by star Cailee Spaeny at the Gotham Awards (via The Guardian) - appears to suggest even more wonderfully practical scares are on the horizon, too.

So, hopefully this means on August 16, 2024... in cinemas, everyone will hear you scream.
