10 More Weirdest Cult Horror Films You Need To See
8. Inferno
The original Suspiria is a pretty strange film to begin with, but Italian maestro Dario Argento managed to completely up the weird factor in this often-overlooked sequel to his much-loved classic.
Moving the action from Germany to the dazzling sights of New York City, this sequel sees music student Mark and his sister Rose stumble across Mater Tenebrarum, an ancient witch who has taken residence within a lavish apartment block in the city. Naturally, Tenebrarum likes her privacy and pretty soon the bodies begin to pile up as Mark gets closer to exposing her secrets.
Despite the American setting, this is pure Italian weirdness through and through. Those looking for the same bombast and lavishness as Suspiria may be a little disappointed by the film's slightly more reserved nature, but bubbling away beneath the surface is a very sinister threat that perfectly punctuates the insanely gruesome death scenes.
Thankfully time has been kind to Inferno, and many of its critics have since warmed to its alluring charms. It may not come close to matching the sheer brilliance of Suspiria, but it's a worthy successor that fans of Italian horror will find endless enjoyment in.
