10 Most Ambitious Movies Ever Made

3. Toy Story

Does it even need explaining how absurdly ambitious Pixar's feature debut was? Toy Story was the first full-length motion picture comprised entirely of CGI; it is the film that started contemporary animation as we know it, and though some might knock it for basically burying Disney's signature 2D, hand-drawn style, it is in the service of soaring to greater aesthetic heights. Though we're inundated with probably too much animation these days, the fantastic tales that filmmakers have been able to tell because of the glass ceiling that Pixar broke is unmistakable; this gleeful tale about the pleasure of play endures as not only the greatest animated film ever made, but also one of the best full stop. The sheer ballsiness, to challenge the masters of animation with an emerging form of filmmaking, to rope in famous actors like Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, and to then beat Disney at their own game, is remarkable. Arguably no film on this list has altered the way we watch movies as much as Toy Story.
