What it really means: 'Look, nostalgia! Now hand over your money'.

First of all, its not even a word. Secondly, hearing veteran actors on a franchise being referred to as 'legacy players' is just an infuriating phrase to hear for some reason. This new trend is essentially a sequel that exists within franchise continuity but also has plenty of nostalgic callbacks to previous entries.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is of course the most obvious example, with some people critical that it was a little too reverential to the original trilogy. Jurassic World only brought back BD Wong, but features no shortage of visual and narrative references to the original, Spectre's Blofeld reveal was an open secret and Independence Day: Resurgence was more a trip down memory lane than an actual movie.

This kind of weaponized nostalgia only has a limited shelf life, there's only so many times you can reference something that happened in a previous movie before it starts getting stale. The best franchises are the ones that can constantly reinvent and keep themselves fresh, and an over-reliance on the past leads to a lack of fresh ideas.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
