2. Looper
Rian Johnson has made some of the best movies of the last few years, but you probably haven't seen them. His directorial debut, Brick, was a hard-boiled noir set in a high school. The Brothers Bloom, a con man movie that defied conventions with a cheerful-but-melancholy tone. Looper is a time travel/action movie with Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing a hitman in the future. Targets are sent from the future's future back to the future and killed, their bodies disposed of in a completely different time period. One day, Joseph Gordon-Levitt waits for his next target to appear, and it turns out to be him from the future. And Bruce Willis plays him. But don't go assuming this is the standard Bruce Willis action movie, because this is anything but. Early word on the movie has been great, and Johnson is one of the smartest and most original filmmakers out there. Looper is in theaters on September 28th.
