10 Most Anticipated Sci-fi Movies Of 2024
2024 is set to be a big year for sci-fi movies, with Godzilla, Alien and Furiosa on the horizon.
It is understandable if science-fiction fans felt left out in the cold by the surprisingly svelte, and frequently disappointing films doled out in 2023. Many of the plots we were treated to felt transparent and unoriginal, Marvel well and truly went off the boil, and seemingly endless writers' strike delays pushed some of our most anticipated titles into the new year.
Nevertheless, a cinematic vacuum never goes unfilled, and 2024 promises to be a big year for the genre. A cavalcade of top picks are still on the way, and for many the additional time taken from their conception through development to a final release will have been time well spent.
For indie fans there's the long-delayed Distant on the way, horror aficionados will be excited for an Alien spin-off and a Quiet Place prequel, fans of action can get revved up for the new Mad Max (now with even less Max), and everyone else will enjoy marvelling at big-budget blockbuster spectacle as Dune and Rebel Moon's second parts fly in from places unknown.
If nothing else, it seems 2024 will be the year of the colon and subtitle, with a whole host of the sci-fi offerings positioned as sequels, prequels and requels...
10. Distant
Release Date: January 19
Originally shot during the pandemic, Distant has had a hell of a time trying to find its way to the cinema, with several push-backs and a final release date in 2024. All the more time to build a bit of hype.
Josh Gordon and Will Speck's space-set adventure follows Andy Ramirez (Anthony Ramos), an asteroid miner (queue the Aerosmith!) who gets stuck on an alien planet and has to fight his AI suit and the new environment to try and get home.
This isn't totally new territory for Ramos, who was one of the more palatable elements of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, but it is nonetheless set to provide a unique challenge for the singer-cum-actor who is more at home in musicals than space. And he's not the only one - given Gordon and Speck's last film was Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, Distant should be a nice change of pace for all involved.
