When Sony rebooted its web-swinging franchise with 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, there was a resounding “why?” Why did we need a Spider-Man reboot only five years after Sam Raimi’s version shut up shop? The answer was, we didn’t.
Andrew Garfield’s take on the character never quite clicked in the same way Toby Maguire’s did, and although The Amazing Spider-Man did get an even more mediocre sequel, it’s unlikely it’ll be looked back on as anything other than a blip on the comic-book movie map.
Such sentiments don’t seem to be present for Marvel’s own reboot of the character, at least not after Tom Holland’s charming turn as the Wall Crawler in last year’s Captain America: Civil War. It could be that the film is ultimately hurt by diminishing returns, but so long as Holland plays to his strengths and the movie focuses on the smaller stakes within Peter Parker’s life, this new edition to the MCU will probably fare rather well.
Directed by Clown director Jon Watts, the film will also see Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr returning as Aunt May and Tony Stark, with Michael Keaton appearing is The Vulture. Donald Glover is also attached in an as-yet-unannounced role.
