Director Gareth Evans had the idea of creating a documentary on the Indonesian martial art of pencak silat. After meeting martial art expert Iko Uwais working as a delivery driver, that idea spawned into a blood-soaked escapade showcasing the brutality and artistry of pencak silat.

The Raid takes place in a high-rise, where Rama's (Iko Uwais) police squadron attempt to take down a local crime lord. However, things turn sour when the team find themselves locked in and squaring off with every resident in the building.

In this scene, the unmerciful Mad Dog is torturing fellow gang member Andi after realising he is the estranged brother of cop Rama. Mad Dog has already proved himself a capable foe, dispatching multiple members of Rama's team, and his combat superiority overwhelms two beaten-up brothers in this five-minute mosaic of vicious elbows, knees, and grapples.

The three men get down and dirty in this graphic street fight where all bets are off. Consequently, Andi gets the bright idea of stabbing Mad Dog with a shard from a fluorescent light. That doesn't stop him, however, from holding off the brothers for another minute before Rama finally puts Mad Dog down for good.

The film became an international hit, praised for its gritty, realistic fighting. The Raid spawned a sequel where Mad Dog's actor returns as a more sympatheticc homeless hitman, before going toe-to-toe with Keanu Reeves in John Wick 3.
