Almost five years on, Fede Alvarez's remake of Sam Raimi's classic video nasty remains a divisive film among horror aficionados. While many have declared it one of the best remakes ever and a great horror movie in its own right, many more have (as is so often the case with remakes) derided it as unnecessary, dim-witted, and a betrayal of the source material.

Still, whilst Alvarez's film may have strayed quite far from the series lore of the Necronomicon, it can be argued that this helps it stand apart from Raimi's original trilogy (and subsequent TV series Ash Vs Evil Dead), making it less a direct remake, more a new horror movie in a similar spirit.

Either way, the key aspect that Alvarez carries over from what went before is the gore. His Evil Dead is a very strong contender for the title of most gruesome film ever granted a wide release from a major studio, as the blood sprays by the gallon, and bodies are torn asunder in a variety of very unpleasant ways.

It all builds up to a real crescendo when, in the grand finale, Jane Levy's Mia picks up a chainsaw and puts it to more hideous use than her forebear Bruce Campbell ever did. The phrase 'in your face' was never so apt, nor so wince-inducing.
