Tommy Wirkola's 2009 breakthrough proved that Norway could produce horror movies that stand shoulder-to-shoulder with anything coming out of Hollywood. It gained immediate entry to the exclusive list of the all-time great Nazi zombie movies, and earned its writer-director the chance to try his hand at a big budget studio production (although the resulting Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters proved divisive).

More importantly for our purposes, it established an unlikely chainsaw-wielding hero in Vegar Hoel's Martin. Not much about him cries out 'bad-ass zombie killer' in the early scenes, but when the going gets tough, the tough go bananas with power tools.

Coming off very buttoned-down and repressed for much of the first act, we get the impression that years of repressed rage come pouring out as Martin unleashes hell on the undead SS. Oodles of guts and gore stand out bright red against the snowy white backdrop. All great fun for splatter fanatics.

Hoel returned as Martin, utilised to even more pleasingly absurd effect, in Wirkola's 2014 sequel Dead Snow: Red Vs Dead.
