10 Most Badass James Bond Villain Lairs

1. Blofeld's Volcano (You Only Live Twice, 1967)

The apex of Bond badassery, Blofeld’s subterranean site of SPECTRE super-villainy inside an inactive volcano forever set the standard for cinematic baddies to try and surpass in terms of extravagance, bombast, and creativity.

Bolstered by the visuals of Ken Adams’ glorious production design, the volcano base is truly a genius touch; hidden in plain sight from global authorities and housing everything Blofeld needs for his nefarious schemes of world domination.

The volcano doubles as a launchpad enabling Blofeld to send roguish rockets into space to swallow competing Russian and American spacecrafts, easily manipulating the two nations into bubbling conflict. It’s a plot template that would be replicated several times over the course of the franchise, and it all originated right here.

It’s also the setting of the Bond battle to end all other battles, as 007 teams up with Tiger Tanaka’s ninja warriors (!) in an all-out assault on Blofeld and his SPECTRE soldiers.

This lair checks all the boxes we’ve come to expect from a Bond villain’s lair. Hard to find? Yep. Host to legions of armed guards and destructive devices? Oh yes. The site of an explosive climactic battle? Without a doubt. And badass? It’s a bloody volcano!

Chest thumping James Bond and Haruki Murakami fanatic living in China. Once had a fever dream about riding a rowboat with Davos Seaworth. He hasn't updated this section since Game of Thrones was cool, and boy does it show.
