10 Most Badass James Bond Villain Lairs
2. Atlantis (The Spy Who Loved Me, 1977)
It’s much better down where it’s wetter - take it from aquatic mastermind Karl Stromberg.
Surely the most extravagant, and among the most ambitious of villainous lairs, Stromberg commands an oceanic behemoth that serves both as an underwater palace and marine research laboratory.
Expansive and opulent, the towering structure can both rise and submerge itself deep in the ocean at Stromberg’s leisure. It’s the location of several moustache-twirling villainous acts on his part; from watching casually on a computer monitor as he destroys a helicopter with the push of a button to his use of a hidden trapdoor that leads to a shark tank.
Not only can Atlantis hide away from plain sight, like the best villain lairs, it also serves as a symbol of the grand and epic scale at which The Spy Who Loved Me operates. It’s an underwater city capable of supporting hundreds of people, as they create a new life… under the sea.
A four-legged beast that looks like it came straight from a Metal Gear Solid game, Atlantis is the ideal place for Stromberg to sit unencumbered while his plan to destroy the world above sea level is carried out. That is, unless Bond can help it. Which he certainly does.
