8. Patrick Swayze Tries To Paddle To New Zealand - Point Break
After 90 minutes of screen time spent infiltrating a gang of surfers who moonlight as bank robbers, Johnny Utah still hasn't gotten his man. But that's okay, because the end result of this Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze chess game is all the more satisfying for it.
When Agent Utah finally catches up with surf guru and gang leader Bodhi on an Australian beach - the setting of the mythical "50-Year Storm" that Bodhi's spent his life chasing - some waterlogged fisticuffs are had, with Utah coming out on top. But dammit, there's still a huge, gnarly wave to be had! And this philosophical thrill seeker needs to ride that monster swell before spending the rest of his life behind bars.
"Let me go out there and get one wave before you take me in. Where am I gonna go, man? There's cliffs on both sides, I'm not gonna PADDLE TO NEW ZEALAND!"
As Utah's backup starts to swoop in, Bodhi sells the hell out of his existential angst, and Utah lets him go. The last image we see of Swayze's character is him being swallowed up by an insanely large wave, letting us safely assume he's "paid the ultimate price" after all.
It's fitting that a movie as self-consciously philosophical as Point Break would end on such an audacious, pseudo-spiritual note.
