In terms of surprising death scenes in The Departed, it's kind of impressive that Matt Damon only receives the second most shocking bullet through the head. Granted, the whole reason he gets his brains splattered across the wall of his apartment is because of his involvement in Leo's unexpected execution.

And sweet lord was his comeuppance so damn satisfying to watch.

Mark Wahlberg - who had already made it abundantly clear to the audience that he was only in this movie to be a complete sh*tto everyone he shared a scene with - gets the final slice of the redemption pie.

Wahlberg, finally, recognises that Damon is the mole in his police department, and is also the man responsible for Leo's death. Clad in a stylish tracksuit and hospital booties, Wahlberg waits in Damon's apartment with a gun, a silencer, and a simple agenda.

Once Damon steps off the elevator carrying his groceries, the audience should smell justice in the air. Yet, when he opens his door and encounters Wahlberg and the gun pointed directly at his face, there's a brief moment where it seems possible Wahlberg won't pull the trigger.

Then Damon opens his mouth, the gun goes off, Wahlberg puts on his stocking cap, and the credits roll while the audience is left to cheer with great enthusiasm. Because revenge has just been served, M-Fers.
