10 Most Brutal Deaths In Harry Potter Movies

9. Drowned By The Inferi (Regulus Black)

While Regulus Black's death is easily one of the most horrifying cases on this list, we have to place it near the bottom for the simple fact that it takes place off-screen. But thanks to the books, we know exactly what happened to him.

In Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Harry, Ron and Hermione hole up in Grimmauld Place for a short time, where they encounter Kreacher, the property's miserable old house elf. Kreacher tells them that, before Regulus died, he had ordered him to destroy a locket (one of Voldemort's Horcruxes), but no matter how hard Kreacher tried, he was unable to do so.

That's pretty much all we learn in the movie, but the book goes into more detail.

Upon learning of Voldemort's Horcruxes, Regulus decided to destroy the locket. So, he ventured to the cave where it was hidden (the same cave visited by Harry and Dumbledore at the end of The Half-Blood Prince), and drank the potion it was submerged in. This made him suffer immensely, and, unable to carry on, he was dragged underwater and killed by the Inferi - dead bodies reanimated by dark magic.

So, not only was Regulus in unimaginable amounts of pain thanks to the potion, but he was then pounced upon by a group of zombies and pulled into a freezing cold lake, where they either tore him to pieces or drowned him - or a bit of both. Yeesh.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for over ten years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
