9. John Dies At The End

David Wong's novel, John Dies at the End, is the type of story that was considered unfilmable. Ten minutes into the movie adaptation, it's easy to see why.

Paranormal investigator David (Chase Williamson) sits down with reporter Arnie (Paul Giamatti) and recounts the events that recently befell him and his friend John Cheese (incredible name). His tale involves interdimensional body-snatchers, brain tarantulas, sausage monsters, drugs that allow users to communicate with humans from the future, an amputated arm that can open a ghost door, and a penis doorknob. If that sounds over-the-top, it doesn't even cover half of what happens in this brain-melting flick.

It's not just the content that's bonkers, but also how the plot unfolds. This time-jumping head-spinner is stuffed with Lovecraftian mythology, slapstick comedy, detective noir themes, and Lynchian dialogue. Toss in a couple of Cronenberg monsters for good measure, and you've got one of the most deranged stories ever put to screen.

Just as viewers think they're starting to comprehend where John Dies at the End is going, another curveball is thrown in, which makes everyone go, "Huh?"
