5. Is Thanos An Eternal? - Eternals

Thanos’ part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe may have come and gone, but that doesn’t mean his presence won’t still be felt. He appeared in several episodes of What If…?, and was referenced during the post-credit scene of Eternals by his ‘brother’, Eros.

When Thena, Makkari, and Druig were searching for Sersi, Kingo, and Phastos, they were joined on board the Domo by Starfox, an Eternal claiming to be the brother of the Mad Titan. This raised so many questions that even those with knowledge of their complicated history in the comics would struggle to answer from an MCU perspective.

They are brothers in the source material, though their wildly differing appearances can be explained by Thanos carrying the Deviant gene. However, Eternals in the MCU are slightly different. They are essentially synthetic robots created by the Celestials, in which case, how could any of them possibly have siblings? Does that make Thanos an Eternal, and thus a robot too? What was his story? How did he escape the clutches of the likes of Arishem?

Even if you take Thanos carrying the Deviant gene as gospel, and assume it translates into the MCU, there are inconsistencies. When Thanos snapped his fingers, he put a significant hold on the birth of Tiamut by halving the Earth’s population. The Eternals were told not to interfere with any conflicts unless directly involving Deviants, but if Thanos is a Deviant, why weren’t the Eternals employed? So far, this post credit scene has raised far more questions than answers.
