Spider-Man’s introduction had been a long time coming in the MCU, and after his debut in Captain America: Civil War, the Web-head was finally getting his own franchise under the Marvel Studios banner. Excitement couldn’t have been higher, but the movie arguably got off to the worst possible start.

The opening scene showed the villain of the movie, Adrian Toomes, working with his crew to clean up the Chitauri mess in the wake of the Battle of New York. It was well established that this took place in 2012, the same year The Avengers was released, but then it got confusing. The next scene jumped to the present events of the movie, but the title card stated ‘8 Years Later’.

This would set Homecoming in 2020, three years in the future from when the movie was actually released. Immediately, audiences didn’t know what to think. Surely, this movie wasn’t set in the future, but how could such a big error have made it into the final cut of the movie?

Even Kevin Feige couldn’t explain this away, but the Russo brothers have since confirmed that this was a mistake. Thanks to the events of the wider MCU, many involving Peter Parker, it would be physically impossible for Homecoming to take place eight years after the Battle of New York.
