To sell Poltergeist, Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg could have simply stitched together a montage of its scariest scenes - there's certainly enough of them - but the duo insisted on going one better by filming a short teaser documentary instead.

The debut trailer for the 1982 supernatural bone-chiller, played out as a faux factual investigation into the terrifying phenomena haunting the Freeling family.

It gave audiences a crash course on what poltergeists are and how they differ from regular spooks, setting the stakes ahead of the movie's release without giving too much plot away, although set stills are used to great effect.

The only problem with the footage is that it gives all of the credit to Spielberg, who only served as producer on the project while Hooper directed.
