Cloverfield's promotional campaign was a masterclass in viral marketing, which included everything from cryptic trailers to secret tie-in websites.

Nobody knew exactly what the movie was about when its first footage landed with a thud, revealing only a release date, the found footage format, JJ Abram's producer credit and the Statue of Liberty's imminent decapitation.

Sure, there were strong hints that this would be a bona fide monster flick. The guttural roar and hints of mass destruction were dead giveaways, but this is how you build intrigue and a sense of mystery around a film.

Cloverfield was a monster hit, raking in $170.8 million off a budget of just $25 million, and much of its success was down to the way the movie was marketed.
