10 Most Criminally Underrated Blockbusters Since 2000

10. 47 Ronin (2013)

47 Ronin, starring Keanu Reeves and Hiroyuki Sanada, was a fantasy-action film released on Christmas Day 2013. It was a massive box-office bomb. US entertainment outlet Variety have reported that the film may have ended up losing Universal Pictures upwards of $120-$150 million, once marketing costs were factored in. The film had an extremely troubled production history, mired with continual script re-writes throughout filming and post-production, and a first-time director in Carl Rinsch who seemed to be at odds with the studio. The cast, made up almost entirely of Japanese actors, proved problematic for the director, as many weren't fluent in English. It is a great shame that 47 Ronin struggled as it is actually a pretty good movie, miraculously so considering all the factors conspiring against it. It's an enjoyable curiosity, weaving the two disparate elements of ancient samurai culture and supernatural themed witchcraft and monsters quite well. We felt it amounted to a good time at the movies. Oh well.
