10 Most Criminally Underrated British Horror Movies

6. The Limehouse Golem

Eden Lake
Lionsgate

Set in Victorian England in the wake of a series of murders, a small London community believe that something dark has come into their reality - an ancient Golem intent on taking the lives of the inhabitants of Limehouse. Boiled down by detectives to be not a creature, but a man, the film plays out as an investigation into who the killer could be, with actor and comedian Elizabeth Cree entangled in the centre alongside her late, mysteriously poisoned husband John.

Functioning as a classic period piece as well as a murder mystery, The Limehouse Golem posits itself as a drama and a thriller as much as it does a horror movie, mixing together genres and tones with a deft hand.

Having only a limited release did nothing but hurt its potential to reach far and wide however, meaning its excellent sets, acting, and premise was all but lost to those that knew where to catch it initially. It's worth hunting out for Olivia Cooke alone.
