Danish provocateur Nicolas Winding Refn dipped his toes into the horror genre for the first time with his latest movie The Neon Demon: a psychodrama starring Elle Fanning as naïve young model Jesse who is, quite literally, eaten up by the fashion industry.

It was one of 2016’s most polarising movies, receiving both boos and a standing ovation after its Cannes premiere. Not too surprising a reaction considering some of its more risqué and controversial moments, but one thing is for sure – it certainly got everybody talking.

Its stylishly sick finale is by no means The Neon Demon’s most twisted scene, but it’s a suitably freaky conclusion to the surreal and sinister affair. After Jesse’s frenemies, fellow models Sarah and Gigi, have murdered and cannibalised her they head to a photoshoot where Gigi suddenly takes ill. Well, consuming human flesh will do that to your digestive system.

Cue some prolonged heaving, after which Gigi vomits up one of Jesse’s devoured eyeballs and stabs herself to death seppuku style. Gruesome enough, but why stop there? Sarah, having watched this all go down, then eats the regurgitated eyeball before nonchalantly sauntering off back to her shoot. A grand and gross finale indeed.
