8. High-Rise – Dog’s Dinner

Affable posh British chap Tom Hiddleston has played it relatively safe in his movie career so far. Apart from that brief dalliance with Taylor Swift last year, the most dastardly role he’s taken on is overgrown emo Loki in the Thor movies. In Ben Wheatley’s High-Rise, however, we see Hiddleston like we’ve never seen him before.

Adapted from J.G. Ballard’s dystopian novel of the same name, the movie focuses on a luxury tower block whose residents are stacked according to class and have everything they could need at their disposal – a swimming pool, a supermarket and even an in-house school. Everything is just peachy until the building’s infrastructure starts to fail and anarchy descends upon the high-rise.

All of this is foretold in the movie’s opening sequence in which we see Hiddleston’s ravaged Dr Robert Laing stalking the abandoned hallways of the building where he finds a fellow survivor of the mayhem – a fluffy, friendly dog not yet driven feral by the mini-apocalypse.

But if you’re expecting a heart-warming man’s best friend subplot to develop, you’re in for a nasty surprise as the scene shifts to Hiddleston’s balcony where he’s chilling out, catching a few rays … and spit-roasting a severed dog leg. How could you, Hiddleston?!
