7. Green Room – Negotiations Gone Wrong

All too often in horror movies, luckless protagonists are suddenly imbued with superhuman strength or genius-level cunning when they come up against bad guys. Likewise, both parties – both the goodies and baddies – seem able to tolerate the kind of violent acts that would finish off any normal person pretty quickly in real life.

That isn’t the case in Green Room. In Jeremy Saulnier’s horror, the violence is very real and very gory. The characters don’t just get up and walk away from shootings, stabbings, hackings and dog maulings and if they do survive the violence inflicted upon them they don’t take it like a man, as it were.

Here’s the set-up: a young punk band led by Anton Yelchin’s bassist Pat play a gig at a backwoods dive bar run by neo-Nazis. Unluckily for them, they become accidental witnesses to a murder and find themselves holed up in the eponymous room with only a handgun to protect themselves from the savage skinheads waiting outside its barricaded door.

Bar owner and skinhead leader Darcy (played by a chilling Patrick Stewart) strikes up a deal with the band: if they hand over the gun, he’ll let them go free. After some deliberation Pat makes the exchange but being nasty Nazis they renege on the deal and almost fully hack off his hand before his bandmates are able to wrestle him free of their clutches.

There’s a gruesome shot of Pat’s almost severed hand and his agony and horror is obvious. Lesson learned: never trust a Nazi.
