10 Most Devastating Movie Openings That Totally Broke You

While Pixar have a reputation for bringing bucketloads of feels to their stories and exploring seriously grown-up material even while pretending to be "for kids," the magnitude of the emotional impact in the opening montage of Up is off the scale even for them.

It all opens so nicely as well, with two young children sharing their love of explorer Charles F. Muntz and the spirit of adventure and becoming fast friends. Then cue the music and cue the tears.

Not content with a heart-breaking portrait of the reality of mortality and the devilishly unDisney message that love will not save you from the grave, Pixar actually seek to break you twice in that sequence. About midway through comes the awful revelation that Ellie and Carl can't have children, shattering their first dream. It's gut-wrenching and then just as you're about to get over it, Ellie dies and the bottom falls out of the world again.
