10 Most Devastating Movie Openings That Totally Broke You
6. Avengers: Infinity War
In the post-Infinity War haze that inspired so much discussion, most people focused on the Decimation (or the Snap as it was more snappily called) and the death of Peter Parker in particular as the film's most devastating moment. That's all well and good, but with so much bias towards that moment, people tend to forget that it comes after Gamora's devastating death before the climax kicks off and also after two veteran characters are killed off in literally the opening scenes.
As Kevin Feige had foreshadowed ahead of the film's release, the opening sequence was designed to leave us under no illusions that Thanos was a Big Deal. Rather than just seeing him destroy a planet or something like the Empire in Star Wars, we are invited to watch him - minus the assistance of the Infinity Stones - kill off the two people closest to Thor as he watches on.
Now, Loki was a bit of a rogue, to say the least, but watching the life being squeezed out of such a beloved character was a puppy-stomp moment, and that's without mentioning Heimdall's heroic sacrifice. As openings go, it's not the cheeriest.
