10 Most Devastating Movie Openings That Totally Broke You

5. A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place
Paramount

For a film so obsessed with silence, it's fair to say that A Quiet Place starts with a bang. Playing up to the twin innate fears of every parent that something is constantly lying in wait to gobble up our helpless children and also that they simply won't shut up, John Krasinski's critically acclaimed horror kills off young Beau to give us a short, sharp introduction to this awful, terrifying world.

In order to establish the threat of the mysterious monsters who have invaded the world of man, Krasinski goes full-blooded, intent on showing that no-one is safe and that they will take no prisoners. The most successful way to do that and also create one of those post-cinema watercooler moments is obviously to kill the youngest member of a family in response to something as simple and innocent as wanting to play with a toy. In front of his parents as one of them vainly struggles to make it to him before he's killed.

A heart-warming family movie, this is not.
