When you look at the MCU as a single unit, Disney and Marvel Studios seem to have a pretty serious issue with parents. Fathers and father figures are often the absolute worst people in a superhero's life or are killed off as a "lesson" in the harsh realities of life and mothers are either entirely non-existent or are killed off early on too.

Even with Frigga sacrificing herself in Thor: The Dark World, Yondu dying to save his "son" Peter Quill in Guardians Vol 2 and the Starks being murdered by The Winter Soldier, the most tragic parent-related moment in the entire franchise sees Quill's mother killed off. Before the added kicker that her cancer is caused wilfully by Ego that comes in the sequel, all we get to see is a Steven Spielberg-like trauma as Peter visits his mother on her deathbed and she takes her last breath.

Even without knowing her, watching her die from the perspective of her son is awfully wrenching stuff.
