6. Scott Pilgrim - Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
When I first heard that Edgar Wright was adapting
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, my first question was: "
What's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World?" Existing as the dedicated pop culture nut that I am, though, I went out and bought the first comic book - you know, just to see what all the fuss was about, and to get out of the house because my parents told me to. Still, I'm glad I made the effort, because Bryan Lee O'Malley's series of graphic novels are genuinely excellent. Having familiarised myself with Scott on paper, I then become nervous at Cera's casting. And I was right to be nervous, because - come movie time - it became very apparent very quickly that Michael Cera was
not Scott Pilgrim. Coming off the back of
Superbad, he was obviously cast in the role because people thought watching him acting was hip and cool back then, but he's nothing like the Scott of the comics. He makes him all sissy and clingy and weird, whereas comic Scott is... well, he's at least
believable in his attempts to fight seven evil exes. The movie version of this character proved greatly disappointing and totally inaccurate.
