10 Most Disappointing Horror Movie Sequels

9. Hellraiser II: Hell On Earth

It Chapter 2
Miramax

This is not the worst sequel of the Hellraiser franchise by a long shot, but it set the ball rolling for the decline of the saga over the last twenty years.

The first Hellraiser film was weird, brutal and tapped into deep flaws in the human psyche in a way that few horror films had done. Pinhead was introduced to the world, and the Cenobites became iconic legends in the horror canon. Hellraiser II: Hellbound built on the dark fantasy of the first, exploring the Cenobite world depicting some truly grisly inhabitants of that horrid place.

The 1992 follow up was the first film without author Clive Barker’s direct involvement (he was brought in to fix the film in post-production) and it really, really shows.

It turned the meta-physical and existential terror of the first films into plain slashers, bringing the Cenobites to Earth. Not only that, but the Tower of Souls the movie centres around looked so goofy – especially when compared to the fantastic special effects that had come before.

Also let’s not forget the complete disregard for the Lament Configuration, which was as intriguing as it was terrifying.
