Look, it's obvious that expecting ANYTHING from a movie with "Amityville" in the title is a recipe for disaster, but there's something inherently appealing about the story of the most famous haunted house in history. Which is precisely why it's been abused so many times over the years.

Still, anyone able to actually see The Amityville Murders - which seems to have been sent out to die on a limited theatrical run and VOD - could have been forgiven for believing this time it would be different. After all, this was a prequel made by horror documentarian Daniel Farrands (who KNOWS and loves horror) that would tell the story that kicked it all off - the 1974 murders of his family by Ronald DeFeo, Jr, which he claimed the house told him to do.

It could have been a good low-key horror, but the cost-cutting and poor execution means it feels like a bad spoof made by people who never went to the 1970s spending way too much time insisting that they did.
