For more than a decade, one of the MCU's great mysteries was the incident which caused Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to lose an eye and consequently don his iconic eye patch.

In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Fury memorably told Cap, "Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye," and so when it was revealed that Fury would appear in Captain Marvel, many fans suspected the film would reveal the truth behind his ocular injury.

The obvious expectation was that Fury would lose the eye after trusting someone who in fact turned out to be a Skrull impersonator, but once again in the interest of subverting expectations, we got something entirely different.

In the end, Fury had his eye damaged by a scratch from Goose, an alien Flerken posing as a cat.

And while it's an amusing surprise in the moment, it ultimately robs the character of a truly defining moment, while once again confirming that the MCU too often sacrifices drama for a throwaway joke.

Even if you accept that Fury has lied about the nature of his injury in order to save face, it's still an outrageous anti-climax to one of the MCU's most enticing and potential-rich mysteries.
