10 Most Disappointing Movies Of 2012

7. Gambit

Take heed: if a pair of legendary Oscar-winning directors write a script but don't want to direct it, that probably means that it isn't very good, and that's all you really need to know about Gambit, a lukewarm remake of the classic Michael Caine con farce. Though it features an all-star cast including Colin Firth, Alan Rickman and Cameron Diaz, Gambit is a movie that just doesn't even manage to gain momentum, instead stewing itself in a confusing and dull narrative alongside gags that don't really make the cut. Really the only reason to even consider seeing it is the performances; Firth is his usual dapper but befuddled self, Rickman is eccentric and far too naked, while Cameron Diaz has her usual charm, entirely accentuated by a ridiculous - and hilarious - Southern drawl. The actors are clearly having fun, but it doesn't transpire well into this mercifully short if mostly witless caper, and really, it's difficult to see why the Coens even bothered with it anyway, because having something so lazy on your CV can never be a good thing.
