What It Promised

With a cast headed by Matthew McConaughey, a femme fatale Anne Hathaway and the always excellent Jason Clarke, this swaggering, dark thriller from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight looked like a smart big screen take on the spirit of things like Big Little Lies and Riviera. Who doesn't love a sexy murder movie, after all?

But Really...

Unfortunately, this one will probably rank pretty high on lots of people's worst of the year so far lists, because it manages to squander all of its promise delivering a twisty, ludicrous drama that thinks it's vastly more intelligent than it really is.

It flirts with the idea that there's going to be a huge, amazing pay-off - which surely could be the only payment for sticking with its outright insanity - but it never gets there and the ending we do get is more meh than meaningful.

The real problem is that it's marketed as a conventional, cool thriller, but it's nothing like that and you get the feeling that if they'd committed to selling how bonkers the whole thing is in the marketing, it might have landed a little better.
