10 Most Disappointing Movies Of 2019 (So Far)
5. Triple Frontier
What It Promised
With a stellar cast, this tale of Special Ops soldiers had been long in gestation (almost a decade ago Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp were in talks for it and Kathryn Bigelow was to direct) and the high-stakes drama alone looked like a real winner. Sort of like Sicario in terms of how heavy duty it would inevitably be, but with a Dirty Dozen sort of vibe bolted onto it.
But Really...
Nobody will stand and tell you that Triple Frontier is a BAD film, per se, but it's just a lot slower and more dull than anyone could have possibly imagined it was going to be. Any shortfall on quality is fundamentally down to narrative issues, because the pace is all over the place at times and the story loses its way somewhat.
JC Chandor is a great director and a wonderful visionary, but he invests too much here in making the film - and the excellent cast - look great without ever challenging their dynamics as much as you'd like. So while there's conflict in the narrative, there's not the kind of internal conflict that's tantalisingly hinted at, but never really played with. And that's easily the most interesting aspect of the story.
