10 Most Disappointing Villains From Otherwise Great Movies

5. The Architect - The Matrix Reloaded

The Great Movie: Though it failed to deliver on the philosophical promises from the first movie, it€™s impossible to deny The Matrix Reloaded€™s successes as an action blockbuster.

The Disappointing Villain: Though Agent Smith presents the main threat for Neo and company, it€™s the Architect who is really the big bad of the piece. The man behind Smith, the Architect reveals himself in the climax of the film without much warning that his character even existed.

He€™s bland, uninterested, and cold, so Helmut Bakaitis deserves praise for his physical embodiment of a computer program. Unfortunately, watching a computer program talk is sinfully boring. What€™s meant to be the emotional climax of the film is instead annoying, with him spouting off the word €œergo€ over and over again, while offering an exposition dump about the history of the Matrix.

The actual history of the multiple versions of the Matrix and the Architect€™s role in constructing them is actually pretty fascinating, so that the film makes it so boring is pretty unforgivable. The Architect just feels out of place and too big a concept to introduce that far into the film. As a result, he€™s completely underdeveloped and we never get to see the power he claims to wield.
