10 Most Disorientating Horror Films
7. Mandy
Any film that features psychedelics is guaranteed to be dysphoric in certain ways, and 2018’s Mandy typifies this. To be fair, this is also true of most films with Nick Cage in them - they all have a slightly fever-dream-esque quality to them.
Mandy is not a fun film by any means, which is evident in its premise of a demonic biker gang tormenting two humble small-towns people. With everything from drug trips and mystical ocarinas, to barbed wire gags and giant black wasp venom, the film raises a million questions which it answers with a million more.
The film’s visuals, whilst headache inducing at times, are pretty damn impressive. Its saturated colour and drifting camerawork help bring the audience in as if we’re experiencing the same trip our characters are subject to.
If you’re after some angry Nick Cage, some spiked LSD and some bizarre cult behaviour (including Andrea Riseborough essentially laughing at someone’s indie-folk mixtape), then buckle up and immerse yourself in the wild world of Mandy.
