10 Most Disorientating Horror Films
6. Eraserhead
Taking a step back in time now we’re going to look at 1977’s Eraserhead, a film widely recognised as being one of the most off-putting and seemingly nonsensical masterpieces in horror history.
Director and writer David Lynch is, these days, a seasoned and respected professional - but he had to start somewhere! Eraserhead was his directorial debut, and it almost didn’t get off the ground in the first place.
The American Film Institute didn’t want to help produce a film that was so surrealist and nonlinear. The film was partially inspired by Lynch’s fear of parenthood, rooted into the issues with the birth of his daughter, Jennifer. If you’ve seen the ‘baby’ that the film essentially revolves around, then you might wonder why Jennifer wasn’t slightly insulted by this fact.
It would be hard to say the film has a plot as such, but it follows a man named Spencer attempting to care for his alien-like baby in a surreal, depressing world. With extensive visual metaphors and numerous confounding setpieces, you’ll get to the end of this movie without really knowing what you just watched but you’ll still be glad you watched it.
