The Harry Potter movies truly became the story of a generation, with a whole set of children growing up alongside them, maturing as the films did the same.

When it comes to remembering this epic movie series though, you probably think of fun spells, enjoyable characters and a dangerous yet exciting quest to save the world. While that's true, one thing that cannot be ignored were the franchise's disturbing moments.

Throughout the films, there were some segments that felt closer to horror flicks than fantasy adventures, which gave a lot of children their first gateway into the world of scary movies. Likewise, it's a testament to how strong the Wizarding World was that it was able to pack in all sorts of messed up things yet still become a beloved series.

The following ten entries will discuss the cream of the crop when it comes to Potter's most disturbing moments, so make sure your Patronus spells are ready as you dive into these traumatising scenes.

This list will contain major spoilers for the entire series.

10. Quirrell Removes His Turban - Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone

Harry Potter Voldemort

It's hard to think of any major antagonists who were built up as well as Voldemort. The series did a phenomenal job of selling this chaotic villain before you'd even gotten a glimpse at him. However, while the set-up and establishment of He Who Must Not Be Named was full of tension and ambiguity, his first physical appearance was downright traumatic.

The first movie establishes the weird and eccentric character of Quirinius Quirrell, who seemed strange yet harmless. However, the climax showed his hidden side, both figuratively and literally.

After Harry makes his way through a selection of tasks, he encounters the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher trying to claim the Philosopher's Stone for himself. Quirrell then turns to our lead and removes his turban revealing the face of Voldemort on the back of his head.

This scene is disturbing enough on a basic level, as the body horror on display is truly grotesque. But, it's taken a step further as it's the audience's first good look at Voldemort. While he's certainly not at his full strength here, he's still incredibly creepy, and kids everywhere were scared at the idea of him finding a full-body again.

It's safe to say plenty of viewers had to sleep with a nightlight after this one.
