The Harry Potter series gave viewers many things that they were not expecting, but one thing that definitely didn't seem on the cards was Harry growing gills.

Seeing the legendary wizard become a human fish hybrid was disturbing enough, but it was made even worse by the frightening presence of killer Mermaids.

During the Goblet of Fire Tournament, Harry is tasked with diving into the Black Lake and rescuing Ron. However, he encounters a large crew of fish-like creatures who keep him from finishing his task.

These almost Lovecraftian monsters are very freaky, and their relentless attempts to drown and kill Harry are incredibly intense. This is all complemented by the beasts' designs, as they have almost human faces, but horribly scaly bodies, appearing very uncanny and gross.

Additionally, the fact that they are aquatic makes the whole segment worse, as Harry is literally out of his element. Watching as their sheer numbers overwhelm the protagonist is very frightening, and those with thalassophobia - a fear of deep waters - were likely scared stiff by this scene.

Finally, the body horror of Harry develop breathing slots on his neck and webbed feet could come across as goofy, but ultimately, it adds to the scene's disturbing presentation.
