10 Most Disturbing Plot Twists In Non-Horror Movies
4. The Perfect Manipulation - Gone Girl (2014)
David Fincher's visceral thriller - based on the masterful novel by Gillian Flynn - contains some of cinema's most talked about plot twists, each more troubling and enraging than the last.
At first, Gone Girl is something of a slow-burning mystery. Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) has gone missing, and her husband Nick (Ben Affleck) finds himself at the centre of a media frenzy, first seen as an innocent victim who's lost his wife, then as the chief suspect in Amy's disappearance.
But then, part-way through the movie, Amy is revealed to be alive and well, having faked her disappearance as revenge for Nick's infidelity. She's left behind just enough evidence to implicate Nick in a possible murder plot, and after her plan hits a snag she hides out in the lake house of her former lover Desi (Neil Patrick Harris).
As Nick uses his TV appearances to beg for Amy's return, Amy decides to go back to him, and does so by killing Desi and making it look like he kidnapped and assaulted her.
When she returns to Nick, the world rejoices, but their marriage becomes bitter when Amy admits everything to Nick and shares news that she's pregnant. Nick decides to stay with her, despite her crimes, for the sake of their child. Damn.
