Jordan Peele's follow-up to the Oscar-nominated Get Out garnered a mixed reception leaning more on the positive side. In the film, a family are haunted by a group of doppelgangers with sinister intentions named The Tethered. It is revealed that The Tethered are failed Government cloning experiments living beneath America in a series of no longer used tunnels who share the soul of their lookalike counterpart.
The Tethered begin to rise from the surface and kill their doppelganger selves in an attempt to 'untether' themselves. At the end of the film in a shocking twist, it is revealed that protagonist Adelaide has been one of The Tethered all along after switching places with her human self when they encountered as children.
It is a deeply uncomfortable ending because amongst many things, it suggests that this Tethered version of Adelaide was able to adapt to life above ground despite being 'soulless' which holds up a mirror to the audience watching.
