10 Most Disturbing Recent Horror Movie Endings

6. The Invitation

Jane Doe
Drafthouse

In Karyn Kusama's The Invitation, Will attends a dinner party with his girlfriend after receiving an invitation from his ex-wife (an already disturbing enough concept). Host David, begins to preach a sort of spiritual philosophy he has been following and shows the guests a series of videos by the groups leader which seem to get stranger and stranger.

Just in time, Will uncovers the true motive of the cult, finding 'peace through death' and realises they plan to poison all the guests with the wine they serve. David lights up a red lantern outside the house to signal the taking place of the ritual.

The truly disturbing revelation comes at the very end of the film when Will escapes and watches in horror as the Los Angeles hills begin to light up with the familiar red lanterns seen earlier. Sirens and helicopters are heard and it is clear that the city is erupting in panic and chaos.

The gut-punch of this ending is the realisation that the disturbing events that have taken place are not just limited to this one dinner party, but seemingly all over the city and possibly beyond that. To know that the horrifying actions are not those of a few individuals but a much larger group than originally thought is a truly chilling conclusion.
