3. The Witch
Robert Egger's The Witch is a period horror set in the 1630s New England about a puritan family whose baby is stolen by a mysterious creature of the woods. It is a slow-building film that excels at creating paranoia, mirroring the actual fears of witchcraft of that time period. The family is torn apart from the inside, as young daughter Thomasin is accused of practising witchcraft and bringing hell on her family after a series of unsettling events occur.
At the end of the film, the desperate Thomasin enters the barn and demands the family's goat Black Phillip, to speak with her. In a surprising twist, Black Phillip transforms into a devilish man and offers a contract for her to sign, promising a life of deliciousness. She removes her clothing and agrees, and in the final moments of the film Thomasin walks naked into the woods and levitates amongst coven of laughing witches.
This ending is disturbing on a number of levels because not only is there the revelation that the satanic goat was watching from the start, most likely influencing the family, but she also agrees to become one of the very same witches who murdered her baby brother earlier.
