10 Most Divisive Films Of All Time

9. Hulk

Luke Skywalker The Last Jedi
Universal Pictures

Hiring Ang Lee to direct Hulk was the kind of brave decision we're unlikely to see again any time soon. Best known for movies more likely to play in art house cinemas, he took to the project with enthusiasm and strove to deliver something which fully explored the emotional side of the character in favour of a big, dumb tentpole blockbuster.

Quite how well he succeeded in this aim has been the subject of intense debate over the 15 years since Hulk was released. Its fans have loudly and frequently declared it to be the best comic book movie adaptation of all time, delving into Bruce Banner's character development while treating the audience like adults, capable of foregoing constant action beats and allowing the plot to breathe.

Others are not so kind: Hulk is nothing more than "angry Shrek!" full of terrible CGI and a ridiculous scene with giant dogs. Many consider it to be the most boring Marvel movie of all time, with laughable and annoying split screen action sequences. "I came here to see a movie not watch a giant comic book!"

But mostly, they just wanted to see "Hulk smash!", and Ang Lee failed to deliver the prerequisite amount of carnage to keep the popcorn munching crowd happy.
